Rustic Lapis Prayer Beads

These lapis prayer beads are not the exquisite quality stones I generally use in my pieces. But their story is quite compelling.

The lapis disks in this 108 bead mala were hand carved by Afghani refugees. I purchased them from American women who have been traveling and trading in the area for years.

Women collect the stones. Men carve them.

The Guru bead is an old, possibly antique Tibetan bead, made of naga shell.

The yellow divider bead is also Tibetan. It’s made of copal, which is a resin. Amber is resin too, but much older in the earth and far more valuable. Copal was often used as a replacement, especially for people who could not afford genuine amber.
